Weather can change how you feel, but not because every ache, headache, or tired day has a simple atmospheric cause. Heat, cold, humidity, pollen, light, and the speed of a seasonal change can alter what your body has to manage. The effect also depends on the body meeting those conditions.
A hot day may loosen one person and exhaust another. Cool, wet weather may feel calming to someone who usually runs hot, while someone else becomes heavy, cold, and reluctant to move. Even the same person can respond differently when sleep, illness, food, stress, or recent activity has changed.
The useful question is not, “Is this weather bad for me?” It is:
What demand is the weather adding, and what is my body already trying to manage?
Climate is a load, not a verdict
Your body continually regulates temperature, circulation, fluid balance, breathing, and energy use as the environment changes. In heat, it has to release extra warmth. High humidity makes that harder because sweat cannot evaporate as efficiently. Cold creates the opposite problem: the body loses heat, and wet clothing or wind can accelerate that loss.
These are not matters of belief. The World Health Organization describes heat strain as a relationship between environmental conditions, clothing, activity, acclimatisation, and the person’s health. The same temperature therefore does not produce the same load for everyone.
Adaptation matters too. Repeated exposure to heat can improve sweating efficiency, circulation, and temperature control. That process takes time. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends gradual exposure over 7 to 14 days for workers entering hot conditions. A sudden heatwave, a holiday in a very different climate, or the first demanding outdoor session of summer can feel disproportionately hard because the body has not yet adapted.
This does not mean ordinary discomfort is dangerous. It means “I should be used to this” is not a useful standard. Weather becomes part of the total demand your body is meeting today.
I noticed the mismatch after moving countries
I learned to think about climate after moving from Australia to the Netherlands. I brought the diet that had served me well in a warmer, sunnier place: plenty of raw vegetables, fresh fruit, yoghurt, whole grains, fish, meat, and tea.
Over time, I began to feel cold when other people were comfortable, tired when I expected to have energy, and bloated after meals that had once felt fine. Hay fever appeared later, although I had never experienced it before.
I cannot prove that one climate or one way of eating caused those changes. Pollen exposure, immune responses, housing, stress, and many other factors can change after a move. What the experience gave me was a better question. Instead of asking only whether each habit was healthy in general, I began asking whether it still suited this body in this place.
That question eventually led me deeper into Chinese medicine. It offered a language for the relationship I had been missing: food, movement, rest, and surroundings do not act on an abstract human body. They meet a particular body under particular conditions.
The weather outside and the pattern inside
Traditional Chinese medicine describes both environments and body patterns through qualities such as hot, cold, damp, dry, moving, and stuck. These are traditional organising ideas, not biomedical diagnoses. “Dampness” in Chinese medicine, for example, is not the same thing as humidity measured by a weather station.
The value of the language is practical. It asks whether the external condition is adding to a quality you already have or counterbalancing it.
Someone who already feels cold, slow, and depleted may find cold weather amplifies that direction. Someone who often feels hot, restless, and overstimulated may welcome the same cool air. A humid week may coincide with more heaviness for one person, while another notices very little. Dry indoor heating may be comfortable for someone who dislikes dampness but irritating for a person already prone to dry eyes, throat, or skin.
This is one reason understanding your current body pattern is more useful than adopting a fixed “weather-sensitive” identity. A pattern describes what is happening now. It can change with the season, your health, and the demands around you.
Four environmental qualities worth separating
Heat
Heat asks the body to cool itself. The demand rises with humidity, direct sun, strenuous activity, heavy clothing, poor airflow, and warm nights that limit recovery. Age, pregnancy, medicines, and heart, lung, kidney, or other chronic conditions can also change vulnerability.
Notice more than whether you dislike the temperature. Does your energy fall sharply? Are you unusually irritable, dizzy, headachy, nauseated, or unable to recover after activity? Does moving earlier in the day change the result?
If exercise is part of the problem, the difference between a demanding session that restores and one that depletes may become much clearer once heat and humidity are included in the total load.
Cold and wet
Cold asks the body to conserve heat. Wind, rain, sweat, and wet clothes increase heat loss, which is why serious chilling can occur even above freezing. At an everyday level, you may first notice that you tense your shoulders, avoid movement, need longer to warm up, or feel more tired after being outside.
Do not assume the answer is always to stay still. For some people, gentle movement restores warmth and clarity. For others, a walk taken when already depleted becomes another cost. The rest-or-move test helps distinguish those two states without turning either rest or exercise into a rule.
Humidity and pollen
Humidity changes the body’s ability to release heat, but not every symptom during humid weather comes from moisture itself. Pollen, mould, air pollution, time spent indoors, and changes in activity may travel with the same weather.
Pollen is a particularly clear example. It can cause allergic rhinitis, eye symptoms, and asthma attacks in susceptible people. Weather and longer-term climate patterns affect when pollen seasons begin, how long they last, and how much pollen is produced. If congestion or itchy eyes reliably appear at a particular time of year, a pollen forecast may tell you more than the humidity reading.
Dry air
Dry outdoor air and heated indoor air can make the eyes, nose, throat, and skin feel less comfortable. But dryness is also easy to misread. Long hours of screen use, medicines, dehydration, allergies, and skin conditions can create similar sensations.
Before declaring that you “cannot tolerate” a dry climate, compare different rooms and routines. The small environment around you may matter as much as the region. A heated bedroom, air-conditioned office, car vent, or desk beside a sunny window is a micro-climate you encounter for hours every day.
What about headaches and joint pain?
This is where certainty should become smaller.
Research on weather and migraine suggests that temperature and atmospheric pressure may be triggers for some people, but effects are modest and studies vary considerably. A weather association can be real without being universal or sufficient to explain every attack.
Evidence for common musculoskeletal pain is even less straightforward. A recent systematic review found no pooled association between weather factors and flares of rheumatoid arthritis, knee pain, hip pain, or lower-back pain, although gout may be different. That does not mean a person’s observation is imaginary. It means the group evidence does not support a simple rule such as “rain causes joint pain.”
If you suspect a weather relationship, record it rather than relying on memory. Painful days are easier to remember when they coincide with dramatic weather, and a written pattern can show whether the relationship repeats.
Keep a ten-day weather-response note
Choose a period when the weather is changing and record five short lines each day:
- Conditions: hot, cold, humid, dry, windy, high pollen, or a rapid shift?
- Exposure: mostly outside, in air conditioning, beside a heater, travelling, or exercising?
- First response: heavy, cold, restless, dry, congested, headachy, clear, or energised?
- Other load: sleep, illness, stress, food, hydration, and recent activity.
- One adjustment and its result: what did you change, and how did you feel later?
The fourth line matters. Without it, weather can become an explanation for everything. Perhaps the humid day is difficult only after poor sleep. Perhaps cold is not the problem until you sit still for three hours. Perhaps a headache follows high pollen and missed lunch, not atmospheric pressure alone.
Change one variable where possible. Move a walk to a cooler hour. Add a dry layer. Step away from direct air conditioning. Check the pollen forecast. Choose a warmer meal on a cold day or a lighter one in oppressive heat. Then observe the result.
The aim is not perfect control. It is learning which adjustment gives your body enough help to meet the conditions.
When weather is not a self-care experiment
Extreme heat and cold can become medical emergencies. Confusion, fainting, seizures, or altered mental state during heat exposure require urgent help and rapid cooling. Shivering accompanied by confusion, fumbling hands, slurred speech, marked drowsiness, or a body temperature below 95°F (35°C) can indicate hypothermia and requires immediate medical attention.
Chest pain, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, a serious asthma attack, or a severe allergic reaction also need urgent care rather than another day of observation.
New or persistent symptoms after moving climate deserve ordinary medical assessment. A new environment can change exposure to pollen, mould, infection, light, food, work, and stress. Chinese medicine can offer a useful way to organise what you notice, but it should not replace investigation of a new health problem.
Let the season change the question
Living seasonally does not require a new routine four times a year. It means allowing the conditions to enter the decision.
If your usual breakfast, workout, bedtime, or way of resting suddenly stops working, do not immediately assume you have lost discipline. Ask what else changed. The temperature may have risen. The mornings may be darker. Your office may have switched on the heating. Pollen may be high. Your body may be adapting rather than failing.
Then make one well-aimed adjustment and watch what follows.
The weather does not tell you exactly what to do. It changes the conditions under which your choice has to work.
